A3 Global Awarded Grant from REMADE for Machine Learning

OCT 23, 2023 (Phoenixville, Pa)- The REMADE Institute, a 167-member public-private partnership backed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), has announced $19.6 million in funding to support 14 new research, development, and demonstration projects. A3 Global, in collaboration with Northeastern University, has been chosen in this latest round to further its cutting-edge machine learning research, aimed at enhancing the prognosis of hybrid and electric vehicle batteries.

Dr. Eugene Smotkin, head of the science advisory board at A3 Global and professor at Northeastern University, commented, "This collaboration represents a confluence of expertise and resources. The research will advance our understanding of battery health and longevity, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for mobility."

Michael Cardone III, CEO of A3 Global, added, "Being recognized and supported by the REMADE Institute is a testament to our team's commitment and the promise of our technology. We're eager to drive forward our research and make a lasting impact on the hybrid and EV industry."

The REMADE Institute's decision to fund these projects stems from a deep understanding and commitment for advancements in manufacturing and materials to push toward a more circular economy. With manufacturing contributing to 25% of U.S. energy consumption and being the largest greenhouse gas emitter at 30%, a shift towards a Circular Economy is not just beneficial but essential. In a press release, REMADE CEO Nabil Nasr highlighted the importance of this shift, noting its critical role in reducing emissions, enhancing U.S. manufacturing competitiveness, bolstering supply chain resilience, and creating clean economy jobs.

This latest round of investment, marking the Institute's sixth, involves a shared-cost model between DOE's contribution to REMADE and the funding recipients. Among the 14 projects, several new partnerships have been forged. These new collaborators join a prestigious list of partners, such as Caterpillar, John Deere, Michelin, MIT, RIT, Unilever, Volvo, and Yale University.

A3 Global, with its new partnership and the support of REMADE, is poised to make significant strides in the domain of hybrid and EV battery health, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in sustainable transportation.

About REMADE:

Founded in 2017, REMADE is a public-private partnership established by the U.S. Department of Energy with an initial investment of $140 million. REMADE is the only national institute focused entirely on the development of innovative technologies to accelerate the U.S.'s transition to a Circular Economy. In partnership with industry, academia, and national laboratories, the REMADE Institute enables early-stage applied research and development that will create jobs, dramatically reduce embodied energy and greenhouse gas emissions, and increase the supply and use of recycled materials. The cumulative, five-year embodied energy savings, greenhouse gas reduction and increase in recycled materials use expected to result from this investment is approximately 1 Quad of energy, about 50 million metric tons of CO2equivalent greenhouse gas reduction, and more than a 40 million metric tons per year increase in the supply and use of recycled materials, respectively.
